Narrow-Guage Railways in North Wales - LEE, Charles E.The Railway Publishing Co., 1945, Hardback ..

Illustrated with B&W photographs. The economic effect of the coming of the " rail road " to the slate quarries of North Wales is perhaps not generally realised, but may be gathered from old records. Before the tracks were laid, the average cost of transport to the port was equal to the cost of production, and we read that no less than 140 men and 400 horses were engaged in carrying Penrhyn slates alone to the port. After the track was laid in 1801, a rather larger tonnage could be handled by stxteen horses and twelve men and boys.
