Based at Hasland Shed (Chesterfield) on the Midland Division of the IMS, the author undertook multifarious passenger and goods workings throughout Derbyshire, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. His frank reminiscences of twenty years steam duties include recollections of a wide range of BR, LMS and pre-grouping locomotive types, with an especial affection for the LMS Beyer Garratts. Amongst the many trips and incidents recalled are the Peak District lines; York and Sheffield during the Blitz; and the final run of the last Hasland Beyer Garratt to Crewe prior to scrapping. Locations and trips recorded include workings to Leicester, Crewe, Barnsley, Nottingham, Derby, Leeds and Rotherham.”
