From the introduction: “This book has been written in response to demand for a work on navigation which covers the syllabus for the Yachtmaster Offshore Certificate. There are two possible approaches to navigation: the mathematical, which treats problems essentially as a matter of calculating the shortest distance between two points on an oblate spheroid (the squashed sphere which we inhabit), and the graphical, which encourages the solution of problems by drawing lines on charts. The former is best suited to commercial and ocean navigation, when the saving of fuel is of paramount importance. The latter, upon which this book is based, is appropriate to yachts, as most of the errors which can be made are apparent to anyone with common sense and the graphical representation on a chart is relatively easy to relate to the physical geography of the sea and coastline.”
