From the cover: “The F-104 Starfighter has rightly been described as one of the most controversial aircraft in history. To the Americans it was, as its appearance proclaims, ‘a missile with a man in it’. It was also undoubtedly a hot and unforgiving aircraft as the pilots of many NATO and other Western world air forces were to discover. Nonetheless, handling it was well within the capability of the frontline pilot who had mastered the earlier generations of jet fighters but to those who hadn’t had experience with earlier jets, either in the air or on the ground — the newly revived Luftwaffe for example the F-104G which the Germans had bought with such enthusiasm and built under licence in vast numbers, became a national scandal and very nearly a national disaster. In the aircraft’s early years, the Luftwaffe loss rate rose from 80 per 1 00,000 flying hours in 1961 to 139 in 1962 and still over 84 in 1965 with a Starfighter write-off about every 10 days. It was at this time that the F-104G gained a fearsome reputation as the ‘widow-maker’ and it took a major reorganisation of the German Air Force to sort out the problem and make the F-104G once again an acceptable frontline aircraft.”
