Subsequently, he completed fifteen years with the Merseyside team in which he gained a League Championship medal, he captained England and played in twenty-seven internationals, when the English side was considered to be at its strongest. In 1955 he became manager of Sheffield United and three years later, after inspiring a revival in the fortunes of the Bramall Lane club, he took up the appointment of manager of Aston Villa. This, his first book, represents forty years of football history — much of it made by the author himself.”
