The American Problem - D. W. Brogan

Hamish Hamilton, 1944, Hardback in Dustwrapper..
Condition: Good+ — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a tear to the head of the spine and foot of the upper panel, with heavy tanning to the spine. Pages lightly age-tanned.

From the cover: “The American Problem is an attempt to explain to the English reader certain basic facts about the United States that, unless borne in mind, will lead to misunderstanding and recrimination. It will try to illustrate the truth which ought to be obvious but is not always so considered, that the United States is a foreign country. Seen from this light, most of the causes of difference and misunderstanding fall into place as natural, inevitable, and not merely defensible, but needing no defence. In this sense there is no more of an American problem for the world than there is a British or Russian problem. But there are American problems; there is the problem of integration in a contracting world; there is the problem of preserving unity over three million square miles; there is the problem of the political, educational and other institutional means of fostering this unity; there is the problem of minority groups, Negroes, Catholics, Jews and of immigrant groups in general. Finally, an attempt is made to estimate the chances of American participation in an effective organization for world peace.”
