First in this, paperback, edition. From the cover: “The authors have long felt that the arbitrary division between thermal and other (notably mechanical) properties of materials has led to fragmentation, implicitly encouraging the student to treat as divorced and completely unconnected, phenomena which in fact arise from similar mechanisms. This text therefore attempts to consider the properties of materials as a whole, using a molecular theory approach. In most instances the authors have worked from the microscopic viewpoint, but concentrated on demonstrating how the results found macroscopically may be explained. The divisions which appear in traditional texts are somewhat unrealistic, simply because few really clear cut divisions occur in the subject matter. The authors have chosen to divide the book into three parts, dealing respectively with the solid phase, the transitional phase and the gaseous phase. These, the differences which occur in molecular situations, are used to provide the fundamental divisions in the subject matter.”
