A Study of Pentecostal Glossolalia And Related Phenomena. The last three decades have seen a resurgence of glossolalia or 'speaking with tongues' which transcends the traditional denominational boundaries. It has been regarded by some as the emotional extravagance of unstable exhibitionists, while others regard it as identical with the phenomenon of speaking with tongues of Apostolic times. This book traces the history of Pentecostalism and Neo-Pentecostalism and examines the phenomenon of glossolalia in the light of recent research into its physiological causes and effects, the psychology of the glossolalic condition and the form of the utterance. Due weight is given to the Christian glossolalist's own interpretation of the experience but account is also taken of the role of sacred sound and utterance in other religious cultures. Both these undertakings are regarded as prerequisites for a proper theological evaluation. 276pp. Size: 8vo Large Post (8¼" x 5")
