From the preface: “PRAYERS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT is for the ordinary man and woman — people who are told, and who in varying degrees believe, that prayer is an important part of the spiritual life and who would be pre pared to go at it seriously if only they knew how. Some have read books on prayer, but have found them, as the Psalmist found God’s knowledge of him, ‘too wonderful and excellent’ for them, they ‘cannot attain unto it’! Others have read no books on the subject, but they stumble along, sometimes tempted to abandon the effort, sometimes glimpsing the fact that they are at the beginning of a road which would lead to a fair country if only someone would guide them. They do not need more exhortation to pray. They need direction and exposition.
