Stefan Radex, a political leader about to form a coalition government, unaccountably disappears. We go back to his boyhood on a poverty-stricken Adriatic island, his isolation even with his own community, all that leads up to his losing, at the age of 21, 'the knack of acceptance' and swimming to the mainland. Here he becomes a Communist, revealing qualities of leadership, both in a bitter miners' strike and later as a leader of Partisans, which match his physical endurance. Why then, on the eve of his greatest triumph, does he disappear?
