From the introduction: “The object of the present edition of the great Scottish poet William Dunbar is to bring his works within easy reach of all serious students and lovers of what is best in our literature. And the desirability, we may almost say the necessity, for such an edition arises from the fact that the existing admirable library editions — that of the Scottish Text Society, that of The Imperial Academy of Sciences, Vienna (Professor Schipper), and David Laing’s edition, excellent, in its time, but now largely superseded — are now all difficult and costly to procure, and contain either far more or, occasionally, rather less than is necessary or desirable for the purposes of the present volume.”
