Illustrated with B&W photographs. This is a book about witchcraft and magic: not the black-cat-and-broom- stick variety that goes with conical hats in a fairy tale, but the kind that commands ten million followers today in Brazil — the most modern republic in Latin America. Where races and cultures, mentalities and beliefs, civilisation and barbarism, religions and primitive cults mingle to form an amalgam unique in the world. The author traces in fascinating detail this interpenetration of cultures, charting the metamorphoses which through the years have reconciled the complex African theogony with Christian dogma. He examines African myth and ritual in its effect on the superstitious Europeans, showing persuasively how the Brazilians who “practically sucked a knowledge of magic from the breasts of their Negro milk-mothers” were despite the opposition of Church and State to respond to the hybrid religion generically termed Spiritism.
