Normandy, on 28 July, 1944: while the British Army is stalemated outside Caen, to the West the Americans are fighting their way through the dense, green, claustrophobic Normandy countryside. In twenty-four hours of high- pressure planning, six British divisions are redeployed westwards to join the flank of the American attack. Battle describes the impact of this planning on one British battalion: how officers and men receive and implement their orders, move to the combat zone, make contact with the Americans who are to fight alongside them; how, with little time to collect themselves, they are committed to battle; an how infantry, tanks and artillery work together.
