FROM THE COVER: “HIJMS FUSO was the first Japanese super-dreadnought battleship designed in 1911 within the 8 x 8 programme. She was the first of four twin battleships, with her sister-ship Yamashiro and the ‘improved Fuso-class’ Ise and Hyuga. After commissioning in November 1915 Fuso, with 30,600 tons trial displacement and twelve 356mm guns in her main armament, was the biggest and most powerful battleship in the world, with her closest rival being HMS Queen Elizabeth with eight 381mm guns. During twenty-nine years of service she was thoroughly modernised through two reconstructions. Her distinctive silhouette, created by the highest pagoda tower in the Imperial Navy, was visible in many operations of the Imperial Japanese Grand Fleet during the Pacific War until the last conflict in Surigao Strait. During this battle Fuso was targeted by torpedoes and gunfire from US battleships and cruisers until finally she was lost with all her crew still on board.”
