48 Colour Plates. From the introduction: “Britannia’s Bulwarks is a linking of the old with the new in a manner altogether new. The famous ships of glorious memory are presented by picture and pen alongside their counterparts in the Modern Navy. The renowned vessel of Grenville, for example, in her glorious fight with the Spaniard, is linked with the ‘Revenge’ of those days; Cochrane’s ‘Speedy’ taking the ‘Gamo’ appears with her namesake, the torpedo-gunboat of the Modern Navy; the ‘London’, burnt in the Medway in 1664 is a contrast and companion to the ‘London’, launched in 1890. The leading idea has thus been to group some modern ship much in the public mind with her famous namesake in the old wars, and thus to represent the navy in its past and its present, illustrating its continuity and employment. The result, it is believed, is the production of a gallery of naval portraiture such as has not before been seen.”
