Newsday embarked on a journey into the past. A team of reporters, photographers, graphic artists and researchers was assigned to a two-year undertaking that would become the largest editorial project in the paper's history, and perhaps the largest ever attempted by any newspaper. It endeavoured to document the history of Long Island from the Ice Age to the Space Age. The result was Long Island: Our Story - a daily, 273-part series that has been reproduced in this book, along with maps, graphics and features also published during the course of the project.
