Chamberlain, Appeasement And the Manipulation of the Press. Illustrated with B&W photographs. A study of how the British Government manipulated the ‘free’ and ‘independent’ British press between 1937 and 1940. It tells the story ofa hitherto neglected aspect of Neville Chamberlain’s ill-fated search for a rapprochement with Nazi Germany and Italy, namely his assiduous and largely successful attempts to curb the hostility of the British press towards the Fascist states and enlist the newspapers as active supporters in his policy of appeasement. The book throws new light on the role of some hitherto obscure members of Chamberlain’s entourage, including his Press Secretary at Downing Street, George Steward, and Sir Joseph Ball, an ex-Ml5 officer who ran the Conservative Research department.
