A collection of turn-of-the-century postcards. From the cover: “Few books can have originated in more curious circumstances or more fortuitously than this. While browsing in a Viennese antique shop, Charles Osborne, the well-known author and musicologist, came across a collection of postcards of European theatres and opera houses, all neatly mounted in an album. Further investigation revealed that they had all been sent to the same man — one Emil Wipperich, principal horn player for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra between 1882 and 1914 — from all over Central and Eastern Europe, from places such as Prague, Dresden, Warsaw, Bayreuth, Salzburg, Leipzig, and Ljubliana.”
