The biography of Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart (1887-1970), diplomat and author, born 2nd September 1887 at Anstruther, Fife, the eldest of the five sons of Robert Bruce Lockhart, headmaster of the Waid Academy, and his wife, Florence Stuart, daughter of John McGregor. A younger brother was J. H. Bruce Lockhart, headmaster of Sedbergh School (1937-54), and another, Sir Rob Lockhart, became a general in the Indian Army. His only sister, Freda, made a reputation as film critic and journalist.
