Maps to the end papers. From the cover: “The action of this book takes place in two islands, Corfu and Ceylon. Its characters are also of two very different worlds — the old and the new. On the one hand we have the Duke de Richleau and his friends, Richard Eaton, Simon Aron and Rex Van Ryn, who still believe in all that the British Empire stood for and that marriages between people with different coloured skins rarely bring lasting happiness. On the other we have Douglas Rajapakse (a cultured and charming Sinhalese lawyer), Truss (Rex’s son) and Fleur (Richard’s daughter), a product of her age and the University of London, who is a red-hot Socialist and believes passionately in all the ‘freedoms’, including that of sex.”
