2nd Impression. Richard Gerbrand, a senior German medical student, had served in his country's medical service throughout the war. Penniless and unhappy, he meets by chance an ex-soldier patient, now an official of importance, who has every reason to believe that the surgeon who had saved his life in Russia is a qualified doctor. When, through the ex-soldier's influence, an appointment as a surgeon in a hospital is offered to Gerbrand, the temptation proves too great. He falls.
