This book describes in this novel the pitiful fate of those men whose faces were badly disfigured during the Second World War. He tells of the doctors in the special military hospitals who, with painstaking devotion and infinite patience, strove to heal the scars and give back the wounded their faces – and not only that, for no less severe were the psychological wounds they also had to heal. The story centres around Bernegg Castle, which was converted into a hospital for the fatally wounded in the war. There are no mirrors here. All the windows are of frosted glass, to ensure that none of the patients is confronted with the sight of his disfigured face.
