Lilia a warm-hearted foolish young widow, flees from the domination of her late husband's family and marries a penniless Italian, met casually in an obscure and ancient Umbrian town. Dying, Lilia gives birth to a child, and the English relatives, moved partly by self-righteous morality and partly by family pride, set out to secure possession of the infant from its erratic father, whose claim is simply that, unlike them, and with a primitive passion, he loves it. The story opens light-heartedly and the reader hardly notices, until it reaches its violent anticlimax amid rainy darkness on an Italian hillside.
