From the cover: “The book begins with the man, Lonsdale Walsh, a very rich financier, being convicted of murder and sentenced to imprisonment for life. He has been convicted on entirely perjured evidence. He appeals with no success. He petitions the Home Secretary, but again unsuccessfully. What is he to do? It is exceedingly rare today for a person to be convicted unjustly ofa serious crime, but, except in a perfect State, such things must occasionally happen. Perhaps the reader may like to consider what he himself would do if such an injustice occurred to him and if he were a wealthy man. Or he can read first what Lonsdale Walsh did and then decide whether he would have been likely to do the same.”
