First British Edition. [First Published: France Éditions G. P. 1969]. From the cover: “In the summer of 1944, when the end of the Second World War was in sight, thousands of the maquisards — the fighters of the French Resistance Movement — were pursued by the Germans in the mountainous area of the Vercors where they had their hideouts. It was there that many of them died and that bitter reprisals for their guerrilla tactics against the occupying German forces were taken against the inhabitants of the nearby villages. Paul Berna has based his story on an incident which actually took place during this tragic period preceding the liberation of France, and has set it in the country south of the Vercors where he imagines a young community growing up twenty-five years later around the site of a new factory.”
