During the pestilence of 1348, seven ladies and three gentlemen of Florence took refuge in the Italian countryside, where they spent ten days travelling from one luxurious country house to another, idling away the hours by talking, reading, making love, and telling stories. It was a disastrous period in the history of Florence, but the group made a most comfortable best of the unfortunate conditions under which they found themselves living.
