This book gives the first full transcript of the inventories of Queen Elizabeth's clothes preserved in the British Library and the Public Record Office, London, and the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, DC. Chapters are devoted to Elizabeth's interest in fashions from abroad, and her appearance as recorded in contemporary accounts, as well as in her portraits. Designs for jewellery and embroidery, and gifts of clothing to and from the Queen are discussed, together with the symbolism of motifs and colours.
