From the cover: “THIS BOOK is about producer-cooperation — partnership for all workers. It suggests that the management of business can and should be a profession, whereof the practitioners will be employed by the managed for their own profit, as are other professional men by their clients. It will have to be well paid, but there is, the book suggests, no need whatever for such pay as is in effect drawn at present by the more fortunate of the captains of industry. Employers will still be free to dismiss employees, as professional men are free to pick and choose their clients. Employees will be likewise free to change employers, as we are all free to change our professional advisers. Regulation of this freedom on both sides will develop gradually. In theory producer-cooperation might secure a vast increase of production and of social peace and of general well-being. But how is this to be achieved in practice? This book describes a forty-year effort to devise a feasible technique. It has given rise to a partnership of nearly twelve thousand members with a pay-sheet of four million a year. Up to now the transference of profit to the managed has been more than two million and but for heavy bombing and other bad luck would have been already much greater. The essential ideas require no more capital than does ordinary private enterprise and can be applied on any scale whatever. For want of a practicable technique consumer-cooperation, a similarly simple idea, achieved no economic importance until as recently as 1844. Then the Rochdale Pioneers, ‘twenty-eight poor workmen’ (who probably had no idea at all that they were doing anything of the sort) hit upon a new idea. The consequent ‘Cooperative Movement’ has spread all over the world. Forty years earlier, in what was really an experiment with producer-cooperation, Robert Owen was beginning to win worldwide influence. Had he not lost his head and come to grief and his work with him, increase of production and better diffusion of wealth might perhaps have so increased by this time the general soundness of modern civilization that we should have escaped these wars. At all events we should be far safer from a political relapse into tyranny under a false promise of true communism, an idea dangerously attractive to some people but, as the early Christians found, impossible for human nature.”
