The Story of San Michele - Axel MuntheThe Folio Society, 1991, Hardback in Slip Case ..
Condition: Very Good — in Very Slip Case.
Portraiture frontispiece. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the introduction: “The Story of San Michele was first published in 1929 and has never been out of print since. Its author was seventy when he started the book, and only did so in order to teach himself to type — he was astonished by its world-wide success. Its title is a misnomer. After the first chapter, set in Capri, Munthe doesn't return to San Michele, the house which he built himself on that island, until Chapter XXI — and then five chapters intervene until the story focuses on the house again. Nor is the book the story of Axel Munthe. You can read it from end to end without discovering, for instance, that he was married twice, and was the father of two fine sons. The Story of San Michele, one of those signal books, like Cold Comfort Farm, which alone assure a writer's undying fame, is sui generis.”
