From the cover: “THE love story of Heloise and Abailard has proved throughout the centuries so constant an inspiration to every sort of writer that it remains to most people to-day all that they know of two of the greatest figures of the twelfth century. Of Abailard, however, it was never wholly forgotten that, besides being the lover of Heloise, he was a notable philosopher and theologian; and consequently several serious studies of his life and work have appeared during recent years. But the same fortune has not befallen Heloise. Even in this age of biography there has been no separate study of her, at least in England. She remains merely one of the two characters in the love story, and a secondary personage occupying a brief chapter in books devoted to Abailard; while the many qualities besides her passion for which her own age honoured her, and such facts as are known concerning the sixty odd years of her life during which she never saw Abailard, are either ignored, or it is taken for granted that nothing is known of them.
