South West Maritime History Society, 1996, Paperback ..
Condition: Very Good.

No. 199 of 250 limited edition copies. Presentation plate signed by Rear Admiral D M Pulvertaft CB. Illustrated with black and white photographs. From the cover: “Sidney Bartholomew Sandford was born into what was to become a large family even by the standards of later Victorian life with a father already a Thames River pilot and fisherman. River Thames pilotage was obviously in the blood as his grandfather George was also involved in this work. Sidney Sandford had a generally comfortable middle-class up-bringing, being the third of seventeen children. Of the eight boys, one died as a baby and another, Horace, was killed in the First World War at Anzio, and at least five of the remainder went to sea. His older brother, Louis Adolphus Sandford, fell to his death whilst an apprentice from the upper main topsail yard of the Loch Torridon whilst on passage to Port Adelaide, Australia in 1905. It was his first voyage, having joined the ship at South West India Dock, London on the 29th. May, 1905.”
