121 Illustrations. From the cover: “Constable’s world described in this pictorial biography was determined for him by his rural and prosperous family background, by the deep friendships he enjoyed with a few fellow artists and particularly with Archdeacon Fisher. His voluminous correspondence with the agreeable Fisher reveals an often troubled spirit, prone to depression, anxiety and physical disability. For many years Constable courted Maria Bicknell, grand-daughter of the Rector of East Bergholt. Her family long discouraged the love affair but were finally unable to prevent the couple’s marriage. Constable’s struggle for acceptance by the Royal Academy, the attacks of critics and the vicissitudes of his family life never diminished his powerful sense of purpose and the triumph of his ‘natural’ painting, so much of which was inspired by the part of England which now bears his name.”
