From the cover: “This book contains reproductions, with commentaries, of plates from a treatise of Chinese painting first published in 1619 and which always been considered as a classic in China. These plates have often been reproduced in the West, but very rarely in colour; the colour transparencies used in this edition were made especially by the British Museum. In addition the book contains some outstandingly beautiful plates from the Kaempfer Series, a famous collection of ancient Chinese lithographic masterpieces, also provided by the Britishl Museum, as well as the complete reproduction of a work entitled Perfect Harmony (Musee Guimet des Arts d’Orient, Paris), which has never been reproduced before. Most of the plates include a short poem in Chinese characters, for which a translation is of course provided. The reproductions are accompanied by quotations from Confucius, Meng T’Seu, etc.”
