Books of Hours were made by secular scribes and artists in vast numbers, especially in France in the fifteenth century. Everyone of moderate wealth hoped to own one. They are now almost the only medieval illuminated manuscripts which a private collector today could realistically hope to acquire. Almost 300 manuscript Books of Hours are in the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and this superb but little-known collection, assembled originally for the quality of the illumination. forms the focal point of this book.
