2nd Impression [1965]. From the cover: “In this famous book, first published in 1927, Mr E. Keble Chatterton traces the history of the sailing ship in art, from the earliest rough woodcuts dating from the 15th century down to the delicate lithographs of the late Victorian age, when sail was gradually giving way to steam. The one hundred and ten illustrations range over the whole exciting field of maritime endeavour in peace and war. They include Reuwich’s engravings of the Armada and of Admiral Tromp’s last battle, dramatic aquatints by Dodd and Duncan of naval engagements during the Napoleonic Wars, etchings by Cruikshank of life aboard an East Indiaman, and Dutton’s famous lithographs of some of the last clippers and schooners.
