In the summer of 1943 the War department wrote to the parents of C. Louis Carpentieri: "killed in action…In defence of his country". He was the poet who hated war, and had written some of the most beautiful poems of his short life. He had written them on odd scraps of paper, in camp, and in the midst of action, composing them as the mood seized him. When the personal effects of the young Hartford poet were sent to this country, among them were these poems.Courageously two women set about to bring to life these pages. They were the sister of the poet and Miss Spencer of the Hartford times.Signed inside cover by Natalie Carpentieri La Penta with gift inscription. 2 b&w plates.A scan of this book is available if required.
