THOMAS BAINES, explorer, artist, naturist, cartographer and inveterate diarist, was the most prolific of nineteenth century southern African artists. He is especially remembered in Zimbabwe for his sequence of beautiful oil paintings of the Victoria Falls which he sketched in 1862. Born at King's Lynn, Norfolk, in 1820, Baines sailed for Cape Town in 1842. This phase of his life is notable for his excellent marine paintings of Table Bay. This reprint is a facsimile of the 1941 edition of the Wallis biography to which some fifty pictures have been added.
