Portraiture frontispiece. Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna (1888-1958) was the most distinguished Fijian of his time: Oxford graduate, barrister, soldier- he was decorated for valour while fighting with the French Foreign Legion in World War One- he became intermediary between the British colonial administration and his own Fijian people, Taukei ni qele or owners of the soil, as they significantly call themselves, whose voice he was. This volume of select writings shows how eloquently he could speak; it follows his biography Ratu Sukuna: Soldier, Statesman, Man of Two Worlds, published in 1980.
