First in this edition. [First: 1831] Maps to the endpapers. From the preface: “This book is very unusual, perhaps even unique, in two respects. The first is that its author Sir John Barrow (he accepted rather reluctantly a Baronetcy in 1835) is to the best of my belief the only Civil Servant whose name was in his lifetime, and still is, always linked with the department which he served -’Mr Barrow of the Admiralty’. The second is that this book, which was first published by the House of John Murray, an intimate friend of Barrow’s, in 1831 was still in print, though in the Oxford University Press’s ‘World’s Classics’ series, more than a century later. We will therefore first look briefly at the career and character of Barrow himself, and then at those of the principals in the remarkable story which he was the first to unfold.”
