In the summer of 1992, Christopher Morgan, a farmer, joined a pen-friend scheme whose aim was to give prisoners a window on the outside world. He was allocated Tom Shannon, a lifer, inside for murder. Their correspondence started haltingly, and was almost aborted before it had begun. The two men could hardly be more different, one an educated liberal countryman, the other a hardened con. Yet after the tentative start, a strong and honest friendship developed between them in this exchange of letters, which is as touching as it is revealing.
