London: Jonathan Cape, 1973, Hardback in Dustwrapper..
Condition: Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. A little rubbing to the edges of the dust wrapper, which is a little faded, with two small punctures to the lower panel at the join which extend into the boards but not the text block. Edges of the text block lightly spotted. The pages are somewhat tanned, if tight, and a little musty with heavier tanning to start and finish.

From the cover: “The Abortion is about the romantic possibilities of a public library in California. The library, which came to San Francisco in the late 1870s, is a special kind of place where ‘the unwanted, the lyrical and haunted volumes of American writing’ can be brought by their authors. On duty day and night to receive the books is the librarian, a man with a welcoming human presence and neat, reassuring clothes. In one evening, he may find himself registering such titles as Growing Flowers by Candlelight in Hotel Rooms by Mrs Charles Fine Adams, My Trike by Chuck, aged five, and Love Always Beautiful by Charles Green, a book rejected four hundred and fifty-nine times.
