Illustrated with black and white photographs, plans to the endpapers. From the cover: “The development of the T-38 Talon trainer and F-5 fighter and fighter/trainer in the mid-1950s was something of a gamble for the Northrop Corporation. Potentially, a new supersonic combat aircraft at a price well below that of larger ‘conventional’ types was attractive, for the Talon and Tiger followed the concept of the ‘lightweight’ fighter, an idea that appealed to designers in many countries at that time. Although the T-38 gave the USAF its first supersonic trainer, it was hard to ‘sell’ the idea of a fighter with similar dimensions and also powered by a pair of missile engines. But the US military was committed to a huge aid programme and by the time the first F-5 flew there was a critical need to offer one aircraft that would fulfil a wide range of customer requirements.
