From the introduction: “In 1966, Marc Chagall donated the paintings that today form the core of the collection of the Musée National Message Biblique in Nice to the French government. This considerable body of work includes: a series of seventeen large, monumental paintings illustrating the first two books of the Bible — Genesis and Exodus — and the Song of Songs; thirty-nine gouaches painted in 1931 and 1932 as preparatory sketches for the Bible illustrations, which the art dealer Ambroise Vollard had commissioned him to do; etchings; and lithographs. It is a very particular group because it is entirely devoted to Biblical themes, which are central to Chagall’s work as a whole. Although the artist dealt with other topics, the Bible remained central to his preoccupations and recurred often, forming a running thread through his work.”
