The cautionary or edifying lesson has never appealed more to man than when cloaked in the bright and poetic imagery of the Fable. Animals are endowed with human qualities and serve thus to highlight our own shortcomings and folly. But the fable is much more - it is not just a pretext for spinning-out a trite platitude. In the hands of a consummate fabulist like La Fontaine it is a brilliant poem full of subtle wit and elegance, harbouring, ultimately, an acute and pointed observation. This edition is fully illustrated throughout with the epic engravings of Gustave Dore taken from the original London edition of 1867. First in this edition.
