From the introduction: “The obsessional tendency is both the curse and the cornerstone of Anglo-Saxon civilisation. Without our obsessional, Puritanical forebears and their descendants we would not have won, and lost, an Empire. It is not only common enough as an overt neurosis but the basis of much psychosomatic disorder in which the patient suffers from physical symptoms of emotional causation. There is no really satisfactory treatment for the obsessional state. The outlook in this condition is far better than we believed in the twenties and thirties, but this is less attributable to treatment than to the fact that the disease, at least in its overt aspects, has a tendency to die of its own volition.”
