The waterways of Sydney make an ideal subject for an illustrated book, for nowhere else in the world is there a city with such rich and varied waterways. The city itself is not built on water, like Venice, but it is built to commune with water. In a commercial sense, it is a great port, with large ships of many nations constantly coming and going. One of the pleasures of being in Sydney is to stop anywhere around the harbour, between the Heads and the Bridge, and watch the astonishing variety of waterborne activity. It ranges from splendid cruise-ships and big container vessels down to yachts, dinghies and windsurfers.
