The history of the Jacobite movement, which was born in the revolution of 1688 and died in the dismal failure of the Elibank plot in 1750, is largely one of mishandled opportunity. Even in the earliest stages (when those who were later to become Jacobite revolutionaries were still the supporters of the ruling dynasty), if James II had been capable of leading a determined opposition against the invading William at the moment when he landed at Torbay, he would almost certainly have retained his throne.
