The author presents a balanced and coherent view of Wesley's reasoning, based on a thorough survey of the frequently conflicting evidence. Particularity important are his treatment of the difficult case of Thomas Coke, commissioned as Superintendent of the Methodists in America, and his comparison of the Ordinal of Wesley's Sunday Service, produced for America, with that of the Book of Common Prayer. The character of the movement changed greatly with Wesley's death, but this book should be read by all those in doubt whether a reunion in which Methodists received Anglican orders could be m keeping with the spirit of the founder of Methodism.
