From the cover: “The name Vickers’ has a long-held, international reputation in shipbuilding, engineering, aircraft and armaments manufacturing. Involvement in steel making and the armaments business in the 19th Century provided the expertise for the company to emerge after 1897 as the only warship builder capable of manufacturing a battleship complete with guns, engines and armament. Jon Wise traces the history of the Barrow-in-Furness naval shipbuilding division of the firm and with it the evolution of ship construction practices during the 20th Century through to the present day. In addition to its pre-eminence as a submarine builder, Vickers Barrow was also handed responsibility for building many famous, major surface warships both for the Royal Navy and for a number of foreign navies. Most of the images in this book originate from the Vickers’ archive and private collections and have never been published before.”
