The Golden Salamander - Victor Canning

New York: M. S. Mill Co. & William Morrow & Co., 1949, Hardback in Dust Wrapper.
Condition: Very Good — in Good Dust Wrapper. Unlaminated dust wrapper a little edgeworn and faded with a little loss to the spine ends, now wrapped in a removable protective sleeve. A little age-toning to the edges of the text block.

From the cover: “The thing that faced them seemed alive, its body caught and inspired with a movement of some present long past, and yet eternally alive, a vitality and beauty on which time had no hold. It was a bronze lizard, a salamander, about two feet long, the head thrown upward and slightly back, the long body curved and sloping from the powerful shoulders to the narrowing grace of its crested tail. The pale under-belly seemed to move with the slow, deliberate respiration, of life, and where the light touched the abrupt edges of the scales a brightness flashed from them which flickered and rose with an uncanny impression of restrained vigour. Around its neck was collared an archaic ruff of stiff flames, and the lidded eyes looked out with a serenity that seemed to combine an untroubled awareness of the heat in which its body was bathed with a challenging sureness of spirit. It was something which a man would keep close to himself, would want to keep chambered in the security of his own house, untouched and unknown by others.”

Jacket designed by Charles Lofgren. Size: 8¼" x 5¾". Yellow boards with Black titling to the Spine. 250 pages.
